National Park of Peneda-Gerês

Created in 1971, the National Park of Peneda-Gerês is located in Northwestern Portugal, it has a surface of 278 square miles shaped like an horseshoe. The Park spreads through the municipalities of Melgaço, Arcos de Valdevez, Ponte da Barca, Terras de Bouro and Montalegre. This is the only National Park in Portugal. Within its boundaries we find the hills of Gerês, Peneda and Amarela, with peaks over 4900 feet, and the basins of three rivers – Lima, Homem and Cávado -, that cross and cut up this territory. There are several places from which it is possible to admire amazing landscapes with both its natural and human aspects, such as the Pedra Bela belvedere.

The National Park of Peneda-Gerês enchants all visitors thanks to both the greatness and the silence of its mountains, the crystalline waters of rivers and brooks, the mythical attraction of its dams and, above all, by the courage of people who live here. The territory of the Park is inhabited by mankind from the most remote times until today. It is filled with megalythic, celtic, roman and medieval traces, the proof of continuous and organized human occupation of this area. It is a place with ecosystems almost untouched by man, because he knew how to preserve them throughout the times, having geomorphological sites and species habitats with great ecological, scientific and educational interest. It is biosphere reserve.

The National Park of Peneda-Gerês constitutes one of the biggest references in national tourism, especially Nature tourism. On september 2010, it was voted by Portuguese as one of Portugal’s Seven Natural Wonders. It’s an environmental, touristic, cultural and human sanctuary.
